I started buying records as a new waver in Toronto in the 80s. Went to high school in SF bay area and played in bands. Wound up in NYC in the late 80s as a disc jockey and producer (Space Funk, New Breed, Codek and Irma labels) Played jazz at Lucky Strike, Pravda and Balthazar. Moved to Tampa in 2005, and Atlanta in 2009. I have sold at WFMU in NYC, and shows in Tampa, Orlando and Atlanta. Downsizing my collection of jazz, funk, disco, latin, new wave, electronic, and incredibly strange. Looking forward to my first SCAD fair.

When and how did you develop an interest in vinyl?

Started collecting records in the mid/late 50′s when rock + roll was just gaining traction. There was one radio station in Milwaukee that devoted an hour or two every weekday to the new R&B sound and I got hooked.

What kind of genre(s) of music will you sell at the record fair?

I specialize in 50′s and 60′s Blues, Soul, R&B, Rock + Roll, Country, and the like.

What kind of vinyl do you have?

I have LPs, 45s, and 78′s and a few CDs.

I have been collecting since my twentys.

I will be bringing (psych. ,old hard to find rock, many imports, picture discs), but I have large jazz collection, folk, half speed masters, promos very rare.

When and how did you develop an interest in vinyl?

Always been interested in vinyl since I was young. I had one of those flip-top record players as a kid and proudly played my very first record – “Mr. Roboto” single by Styx – over and over and over… Also copped my sister’s copy of Sweet’s “Fox on the Run” whenever I had the chance.

What kind of genre(s) of music will you sell at the record fair?

Tonevendor specializes in indie music, and most of our inventory will be indie, but also classic jazz, electronic, hip hop, folk, and just about everything in between.

What kind of vinyl do you have?

Mostly new vinyl in the genres above, but a handful of used and bargain bin vinyl too.

When and how did you develop an interest in vinyl?

I have been interested in vinyl since I started buying 45′s in the late 60′s. My sister was 8 years older than me and a huge Beatles and Motown fan.

What kind of genre(s) of music will you sell at the record fair?

It will be a mix of 45s and LPs and a combination of R & B, Soul, Rockabilly, Pop and Rock and Roll.

What kind of vinyl do you have?

I mostly collect vinyl (45′s, EPS and LPS from 1955-1963)

Dan Sostrom of ToneVendor specializes in indie, jazz and experimental and while he stocks all formats, he’s bringing vinyl only to Savannah. Sostrom can track his transformation into a “music nut” to a specific moment. “The real defining moment for me was when an 8th grade classmate turned me on to Mad Professor Mike’s Coll Punk Rock Show in 1988 or so,” he said. “My musical world was turned upside down.”

Brian Poust’s interest in records caused him to go hungry. “Around age 14, I began pocketing my lunch money for school and going down to Quicksilver Records in Greenville, NC, to blow it on cool looking used records” he said. At first he said he picked records based on song titles or cover art, “rather than any real knowledge of music.” Still, he said, it led to his introduction to punk, ska, jazz and soul music.

He learned more from listening to East Carolina University’s WZMB and in college he worked at WUSC at the University of South Carolina. “By the time I moved to Atlanta I was hooked on Soul 45s and began researching them further,” he said, “which led to creating GeorgiaSoul, a repository for documenting the Soul music history of Georgia.”

Brian’s bringing soul, funk, jazz, gospel and rock LPs and 45s, with “various oddball records thrown into the mix,” he said.

Vendor Profile: Roger Hoppe, II

Roger Hoppe, II is from Detroit, Michigan. “The Motor City,” he said, “and sometimes Cincinnati, Ohio.” He’s worked in radio since high school and started collecting in the late 80s, “when radio stations were throwing away their vinyl,” he explained. “Lucky me!”

Roger is “heavy on the 70s and 80s and especially 80s rock,” and is also bringing other rock titles, R&B, indie label releases, metal, alternative and new wave. Formats? He stocks LPs, 45s, import CDs, import picture discs and other “rare stuff.”

Mike West is from Clemson S.C. and remembers buying his first record when he was 15. “That was 40 years ago,” he said. He was hooked. Mike carries mainly 60s and 70s rock and has a nice selection of punk and 80s music, “with some newer stuff mixed in,” he said. He’s also offering blues, jazz and more 50s and 60s music. “All vinyl,” Mike added.
